You go quiet when the room gets tense. You make yourself smaller so everyone else stays comfortable. You keep a rule no one ever said out loud: donβt be too much, donβt be seen, keep the peace.
The women before us learned this to survive. Many of them hid what they knew, their prayers and remedies, their anger and their joy, and kept the flame low so no one could take it from them. That flame never went out. They kept it safe and passed it down to us.
I was born in Brazil to Hungarian and Near Eastern lineages, and I now live in Anatolia, where the Chimeraβs fires still burn out of the mountainside. For years Iβve been listening to the women of my line, to what they carried and hid, and to what they were saving for me.
This season, I want to listen with you.
Why now
From Samhain to 11/11, the veil between the living and the ancestors grows thin. Across many cultures, this has always been the time to set out bread and candles, say the names of the dead, and ask them for guidance.
A novena is one of the oldest forms of devotion: one prayer, spoken for nine days in a row. When we begin on November 3, the ninth day falls on 11/11, the night this ancestral season closes.
